Reason For Second Button On Toilet

Many People Still Think These 2 Buttons Are Just For Flushing

Why Do Modern Toilets Have Dual Flush Options?

Have you ever wondered why modern toilets offer two flush options, one larger than the other? These are known as dual flush toilets, and they serve an important purpose. Here’s what you need to know:

Dual flush toilets feature two different levers or buttons. One is larger, and the other smaller, with each button connected to its own exit valve. The larger lever is designed for flushing solid waste, while the smaller lever is for liquid waste.

Water Conservation

The main benefit of dual flush toilets is water conservation. The larger lever uses about 6 to 9 liters of water to flush away solid waste, while the smaller lever uses only 3 to 4.5 liters for liquid waste. This distinction helps save water by only using what’s necessary for the job.

How Much Water Can You Save?

If a household adopts the dual flush system, it can save up to 20,000 liters of water per year compared to using a single flush. While the initial installation may cost more than a standard flush toilet, it’s an eco-friendly option that helps reduce water bills over time.

The History Behind Dual Flush

The dual flush concept was introduced by American industrial designer Victor Papanek in his 1976 book Design for the Real World. It was first implemented in Australia in 1980.

Using the Dual Flush Correctly

Next time you use the toilet, remember to flush according to your needs. For urine, press the smaller button or lever, which may be marked with a small circle, half-circle, or raindrop symbol. For solid waste, use the larger lever, which may be larger in size or have a corresponding visual indicator.
