Dallas’ Star and Mother of Famous Actress Dies at 100

Priscilla Pointer, a celebrated actress with a career spanning more than eight decades, has passed away peacefully at the age of 100. Renowned for her powerful maternal roles in film and television, she frequently appeared alongside her daughter, actress Amy Irving. Her notable performances include Carrie, Blue Velvet, The Onion Field, The Falcon and the Snowman, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, and the TV series Dallas, where she portrayed Rebecca Barnes Wentworth from 1981 to 1983. Born in New York City to artist parents Augusta Leonora Davis and Kenneth Keith Pointer, she began her stage career in the late 1940s, appearing in acclaimed Broadway productions such as A Streetcar Named Desire and The Country Wife. In the 1950s, she appeared on television shows including China Smith before stepping away from acting to focus on her family.

Pointer returned to the screen in the 1970s, gaining recognition with her role on the soap opera Where the Heart Is. Her film work often reflected her real-life family connections, portraying Amy Irving’s mother in Carrie (1976) and collaborating with her children in various projects, including Rumpelstiltskin (1987), directed by her son David Irving. She also co-founded the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop with her first husband, Jules Irving, and later married actor Robert Symonds. Her final film appearance was in The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999), and her last television role was in Cold Case (2006). Priscilla Pointer is survived by her children David, Katie, and Amy, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in theater, film, and television.
