Four Deputies from the Same Department Pass Away Within Six Weeks

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is mourning the deaths of four deputies within just six weeks,

a tragic series of losses that has shaken the department and community. On March 13, Deputy Christina Kohler,

37, passed away, followed three days later by retired Deputy Maria Vasquez, 42. In February,

former Deputy Nguyen, 58, and retired Deputy William Bozeman also died. Each loss has left a lasting impact on colleagues and families.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez offered condolences and reminded staff of life’s fragility and the need to support one another.

Law enforcement officers face unique challenges, including high stress and frequent exposure to trauma,

which can increase the risk of mental health struggles. Research shows public safety personnel are

at greater risk of suicide than many other professions, underscoring the importance of awareness and access to care.

HCSO has emphasized wellness programs, peer support, and counseling resources, encouraging early intervention for those in need.

Community members also play a role by offering gratitude, understanding, and compassion for first responders. Officials urge anyone struggling with

mental health to seek help, noting that supporting officers not only strengthens departments but also fosters healthier, safer communities.
