No, it’s not alien handwriting, and it’s not your physician’s terrible cursive either, it’s Gregg shorthand!

Gregg shorthand is similar to cursive, only faster. Invented by John Robert Gregg in 1888, Gregg shorthand is a type of stenography based on a series of elliptical figures used to quickly and accurately record dictation with a pen.

Favored by students and secretaries across the globe, shorthand eventually fell out of fashion with the invention of mechanical dictation machines and eventually the creation of the personal computer.

With Gregg shorthand, the writer works with a phonetic system of sounds. Instead of writing out correctly spelled words, they record the sounds of the speaker.
