Following President Donald Trump’s imposition of substantial tariffs on imports, Canada and Mexico have responded with their own retaliatory measures. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that the new tariffs would have “real consequences for the American people,” emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Since returning to the White House, President Trump has implemented several significant changes in U.S. policies, including a series of executive orders on immigration and passports. His administration also raised import duties on countries like China, Canada, and Mexico. The new tariffs impose a 25% duty on goods from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on Chinese imports.

Unsurprisingly, leaders from these countries have voiced strong opposition. Trudeau, just before the tariff announcement, stated that Canada was prepared with “Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C,” depending on the U.S. government’s next steps.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum similarly pledged to protect Mexico’s sovereignty and defend its people’s dignity, stressing the importance of equal dialogue without subordination. On February 1, 2025, both Canada and Mexico announced counter-tariffs in response to Trump’s executive order.
