We\u2019ve all seen it in the movies, someone who buries a stash of money during tough times, with hopes of coming back to retrieve it in the future.<\/p>\n

Turns out, it happens in real life, which this couple in South Jersey learned first-hand when they dug up money dating back almost 100 years in their front yard.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not every day you find a time capsule into the past buried on your property, but that\u2019s exactly what kind of day it was for Rich Gilson and his wife Suzanne when they found something interesting in their front yard this past July.<\/p>\n

It started with digging<\/p>\n

It all started when the Gilson\u2019 decided to excavate their front yard last month, with no idea that they were about to unearth a piece of history in the form of old money.<\/p>\n

First came glass.
\nWhile digging, Rich began hitting glass and encountered what he thought were root balls.<\/p>\n

They weren\u2019t rootballs.
\nWhen Rich looked closer, he realized what he\u2019d initially thought were root balls, was actually money wrapped in burlap<\/p>\n

There were two burlap balls with money stuffed inside of them, they had been in a glass jar that had since broken.<\/p>\n

Each burlap money ball contained rolled up $10\u2019s and $20\u2019s that amounted to $1000, and they had the date 1934 on them.<\/p>\n

In the year 1934, the Great Depression would have been in full swing, which puts into perspective how important something like this would have been to someone back then.<\/p>\n

Not to mention, you won\u2019t believe how much that would be in today\u2019s dollars.<\/p>\n

Twenty times the worth
\nIn 1934, $2,000 would have been a whopping $40,000 in today\u2019s money<\/p>\n

When Suzanne Gilson looked up the value of two thousand dollars in 1934, she couldn\u2019t believe her eyes.<\/p>\n

It was like this person was burying forty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

But who were they?<\/p>\n

Turns out, there was a story behind the money, and the Gilsons managed to uncover that too.<\/p>\n

At first, Rich thought it must be tied to some illegal activity from the 1930s\u2019 but soon learned the truth.<\/p>\n

The home was owned by a man named James Dempsey, who had instructed his daughter to bury the money.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t the haul from a bank robbery as Rich had first suspected, but actually the money of a hardworking man who just wanted to put something away during the Great Depression.<\/p>\n

The only problem, after the family buried it they forgot the money\u2019s location and couldn\u2019t find it.<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s not a massive amount of money, it\u2019s the story behind it that makes it special, which is why Rich says he won\u2019t be spending it anytime soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of money but it\u2019s not life-changing obviously, I think the story is more interesting. The history of the fact that this fella did this 90-something years ago. People ask \u2018what are you going to do with it?\u2019 Well, I\u2019m certainly not going to spend it.\u201d Rich told Abc 6 News.<\/p>\n
