<\/p>\nAfter a traumatic event in childhood, Taylor grew to mistrust doctors so much that he wouldn\u2019t move when an ambulance was trying to get through a traffic jam. But he soon discovered how easily he could\u2019ve lost everything for being so stubborn.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to hire a nanny, darling. I can\u2019t handle three kids, my job, and the house,\u201d Taylor\u2019s wife Polly said when they finished dinner and the kids returned to their rooms.<\/p>\n
\u201cA nanny? They\u2019re so expensive, and it\u2019s not worth it,\u201d Taylor replied, shaking his head. He rose from their dining table and went to the living room couch.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, Taylor. I have meetings in the afternoon, and even if they\u2019re a bit older now, the kids still need attention. I can\u2019t do it alone anymore,\u201d Polly begged.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you\u2019re lying. But even if you\u2019re not, taking him to the doctor won\u2019t do any good. I\u2019m not moving,\u201d Taylor said unapologetically.
\nTaylor grunted. He didn\u2019t like the idea at all. He also didn\u2019t believe that his wife couldn\u2019t handle everything. Her job isn\u2019t even real, he thought, but he would never say it aloud.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, it\u2019s too expensive,\u201d he refused again.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have tons of money,\u201d Polly insisted desperately.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust because we have money doesn\u2019t mean we have to spend it on unnecessary things. My mother raised me on her own for as long as she could, and then I handled myself because my father didn\u2019t care. And look at me! I grew up to be a millionaire. They don\u2019t need a nanny. Just tell them to behave after school,\u201d Taylor said, his tone unyielding.<\/p>\n
Polly sighed and left him alone. Their children\u2019s ages ranged between nine and five years old, so they could handle themselves while their mother worked. At least, that\u2019s what Taylor thought. Polly was a writer and worked from home. It wasn\u2019t as complex as going to the office, doing paperwork, meeting with clients, arranging proposals, and everything else he did.<\/p>\n
He scoffed at the idea of a nanny. Kids need to be raised by their parents only. That\u2019s how I succeeded in the world, he thought to himself again, and he didn\u2019t have a single regret about refusing his wife\u2019s request.<\/p>\n
A few days later, Polly fainted in the middle of the living room, and her eldest kid, Mark, called Taylor at the office. \u201cShould I call 911?\u201d the boy asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo! Absolutely not,\u201d Taylor replied. \u201cCall Mara. Her number is next to the home phone. I\u2019ll be there soon. Taylor added before rushing home.<\/p>\n
Mara was their neighbor, a kind nurse who worked nights. He barely trusted her, but she was definitely better than any doctor. By the time Taylor got home, Polly was awake, and Mara was checking her. The kids surrounded their mother, worried.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, how is she?\u201d Taylor asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s speak in the kitchen,\u201d Mara said briskly, almost pulling him. \u201cI think Polly needs to see a doctor. Fainting is not normal for a young woman.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re hardly young. She\u2019s 35, and I\u2019m 38.\u201d Taylor shook his head.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s young, Taylor. She could have anemia. She needs blood work and a check-up,\u201d Mara insisted.<\/p>\n
\u201cNope. No. Absolutely not,\u201d he refused, crossing his arms.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, I know you distrust doctors for some reason, but she needs one, or it could happen again. Your kids are scared. Please, listen,\u201d Mara continued, staring at him intensely.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll get the blood work, but no doctors. My mother died because an incompetent idiot didn\u2019t find her cancer. He misdiagnosed her, so I grew up with my abusive father only because she didn\u2019t get treatment in time,\u201d Taylor revealed. No one but Polly knew about that. \u201cWe had home births because of that, Mara. And our kids are thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mara sighed. \u201cAlright. Get the blood tests, and I\u2019ll have a friend check them for suggestions. But you need to get over your fear at some point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just as Mara suspected, Polly had a bit of anemia, but after some medication, she seemed to get better. After that episode, she asked Taylor if they could finally get a nanny, but he still refused.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you\u2019re better. It\u2019s a waste. Money should be saved for only important things. Who knows what could happen? I\u2019m the CEO of an oil company, but what if I have to become a minimum worker later?\u201d Taylor justified.<\/p>\n
Polly didn\u2019t ask again. \u201cI\u2019m late for a meeting. Don\u2019t call me because I won\u2019t answer today!\u201d Taylor yelled out as he rushed out of the house one morning. He was meeting a huge client and wanted to arrive on time.
