Four police officers were having dinner at an Eat N\u2019 Park restaurant in Homestead, Pennsylvania, when a server started to lead another couple over to a booth near them.As soon as the man saw the officers, though, he told the server, \u201cNah I don\u2019t want to sit here,\u201d and asked to be seated on the opposite side of the restaurant.<\/p>\n
\u201cI looked over and said, \u2018It\u2019s okay sir. You won\u2019t have to worry about it, we won\u2019t hurt you,\u201d said Homestead police officer Chuck Thomas. \u201cHe looked at me hard again and said he\u2019s not sitting here and walked away.\u201d<\/p>\n
The officers are fully aware that tensions have been high between police and the citizens of the communities they serve, so they decided to respond to the r ude encounter by rising above it.<\/p>\n
When the couple\u2019s $28.50 bill came, there was a note written on the receipt:<\/p>\n
\u201cSir, your check was paid for by the police officers you didn\u2019t want to sit next to. Thank you for your support.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEssentially the whole goal of it was to let him know that we\u2019re not here to hurt you,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cWe\u2019re here for you. We work for the public. And we just want to better the relationship between the community and the police.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their gesture seems to have had the desired effect. As the officers left the restaurant, one of the people whose meal they had paid for gave them a quick smile and a \u201cthank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
