<\/p>\nLeslie Uggams has had an enthralling career as a theatre and movie actor. He\u2019s The Harlem-born singer and actress is best recognised for her role in the Deadpool series, but she has had a brilliant career spanning seven decades.<\/p>\n
But, behind the scenes, her personal life might be the subject of a film after she married White Australian man Grahame Pratt in 1965, since their love affair has beaten all the odds of interracial love\u2026<\/p>\n
Leslie was a great singer who cut a song for MGM at the age of 10 in 1953. Encouraged by her aunt, singer Eloise Uggams, she attended the Professional Children\u2019s School of New York and the famed Julliard School of Music in New York.<\/p>\n
But her musical success was only the beginning of her adventure; by 1969, she had her own TV variety show, \u201cThe Leslie Uggams Show,\u201d which was the first network variety show hosted by a black person since \u201cThe Nat King Cole Show.\u201d<\/p>\n
Behind the scenes, though, she met and fell in love with actor Grahame Pratt. After meeting at Professional Children\u2019s School in New York, where they were both pupils, the couple ran into one other again in Sydney during one of Leslie\u2019s celebrity tours in Australia.<\/p>\n
Leslie was aware of the consequences of dating a white man because she had done it in her adolescence, and her aunt had advised her not to consider a future with him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember the shock I felt once when I was dating a white boy,\u201d Leslie told Ebony in 1967.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe emailed me a colour photograph of himself.\u201d It was shown to my aunt. He was a handsome young man with lovely hair. I thought he was stunning. But my aunt took one glance at me and began lecturing me. \u2018Well, I suppose he\u2019s okay,\u2019 she said, \u2018but only for dates, eh, honey? You\u2019ll marry a fine [Black] fella when you\u2019re ready to settle down for good, won\u2019t you?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Leslie stated that she continued to visit Grahame after their fortuitous meeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cI found myself really falling for him, which was quite surprising given that I was only 21.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nShe wouldn\u2019t see him again for 12 months after she left Australia.<\/p>\n
Despite Leslie\u2019s misgivings about her family\u2019s reaction and what it would mean for the two of them if Grahame had to relocate to the United States for Leslie\u2019s work, the two had fallen in love. Grahame visited her in New York after they were engaged for 5 months.<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowing my family\u2019s views on mixed marriages, I wanted to know if they would truly accept Grahame and not just tolerate him,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
Leslie, on the other hand, had nothing to worry about because Grahame was an Australian.<\/p>\n

\n\u2018Of course, we received mail.\u2019
\n\u201cHe lacked the self-consciousness about his situation that many white Americans do.\u201d He readily blended in with all of my friends\u2026because he liked them. And they both liked him, the men and the females.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although they didn\u2019t face many of the racial challenges that the rest of the country encountered while living in New York, Leslie said she still received hate mail because of their marriage.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wasn\u2019t as difficult as I anticipated,\u201d Leslie remarked of her marriage in an interview with PEOPLE. \u201cI believe the reason is that Grahame was not a white American man.\u201d But, of course, we received mail.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I go on tour in the United States, I sometimes get anonymous letters about being married to a white man,\u201d Leslie stated. \u201cI recall getting one in Detroit of all places.\u201d It was addressed to \u2018The Little Negro Entertainer\u2019 and arrived at the club. They are always addressed in some form.<\/p>\n
Grahame took over as Leslie\u2019s manager, and the couple had two daughters, Danielle in 1970 and Justice in 1976.<\/p>\n

\nBy 1977, one year after the birth of their second child, Leslie had secured the lead role in the miniseries \u201cRoots,\u201d for which she received an Emmy nomination for her performance as Kizzy.<\/p>\n

Two years later, she played Lillian Rogers Parks in \u201cBackstairs at the White House,\u201d a miniseries for which she received an Emmy nomination for Best Actress.<\/p>\n
She portrayed Rose Keefer on \u201cAll My Children\u201d in 1996, and she got a Daytime Emmy Award in 1983 as the host of the NBC game show \u201cFantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n
She has appeared as herself on television shows such as \u201cFamily Guy,\u201d \u201cI Spy,\u201d \u201cHollywood Squares,\u201d \u201cThe Muppet Show,\u201d \u201cThe Love Boat,\u201d and \u201cMagnum, P.I.\u201d<\/p>\n
Leslie and Grahame are still married and in love after 55 years, and they have two children as well as a granddaughter named Cassidy.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe laugh all the time \u2014 but it ain\u2019t always roses,\u201d Leslie said of their happy marriage. We have a good time together.<\/p>\n
