Jack and I had only been in our new rental for a day when our neighbor, Lindsey, came over with a tray of cookies.

In the cold morning light, I saw Lindsey standing in her bathrobe, sipping coffee and clearly relishing the moment.

Her shocked face told the whole story, and as she stammered, the agent informed her she’d be investigated. Before walking away, I told Lindsey, “Next time,
