When we are in need of assistance, those who have taken an oath to defend us are usually the first to respond. However, it appears that our heroic officers are assisting all beings, not just humans. So when a terrified dog found herself in a life-threatening scenario, two officers rushed in to save her!
Troopers Malachy Higgins and Dana Atkinson were summoned to the scene after a concerned resident alerted the authorities about a dog that was wandering on the busy Interstate 495 in Massachusetts.
The dog, a German Shepherd, appeared to be bewildered, and when cops attempted to bring her to safety, she ran back into traffic, putting her life in danger. It was at this point that the two officers recognized they needed to act immediately in order to save the terrified dog.
The Massachusetts State Police posted on Facebook, “The pooch was walking in and out of traffic in all three lanes.” “Troopers Malachy Higgins and Dana Atkinson reacted and located the dog, escorting her off the highway and toward an off-ramp.”
Massachusetts State Police troopers collaborated with officers from the Methuen Police Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to save the dog’s life. They were able to stop all traffic and save the missing puppy this way.
The police department reported, “The dog leaped into the driver’s seat and sat behind the wheel.” “Trooper Higgins climbed into the cruiser and persuaded the exhausted dog to take the passenger seat.”
However, the police’ efforts did not end there. They went to reconnect Lexi with her anxious human as soon as they retrieved her. Officer Higgins, a dog owner himself, expressed his delight at seeing Lexi back in her owner’s arms.
“I’m a dog owner myself, so I understand how it feels if my dog goes missing,” trooper Higgins told the Boston Herald. He explained, “I have a wife and a one-year-old.” “I understand how painful losing him would be for them.”
