When I Saw This “Vulgar” Billboard On The Side Of The Road, I Knew It Would Make Headlines

A billboard in Maryland depicting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has stirred controversy. The sign, located in Calvert County, displays cartoon-style figures of the officials alongside derogatory language criticizing them. The message, “DON’T BLAME TRUMP! YOU ARE STUCK WITH THESE TWO (expletive) HEADS!!!,” has prompted mixed reactions.

While some who oppose Biden find the billboard amusing, many Maryland residents find it offensive. Jeanette Flaim, chair of the Calvert County Democratic Central Committee, has voiced objections and seeks its removal due to its potential impact on children.

However, removing the billboard may be challenging. Despite its offensive content, the 2015 Reed v. Town of Gilbert Supreme Court Decision protects offensive speech as a form of free expression.

Flaim aims to address the explicit imagery and language, especially for young audiences. Although understanding its pro-Trump context, she believes the content is unsuitable for public display. She hopes public pressure will lead to its replacement with a less controversial message.

The individual responsible for the billboard remains silent, raising discussions about free speech, decorum, and political expression in a divided society.
